Postnatal and 6 Week Baby Check and 8 week Immunisations
These are on Wednesday afternoons with the GP and Practice Nurse - The baby checks are carried out by our GP when the baby is 8 weeks old, we usually book this appointment just before your baby has their first 8 week immunisations, so you can do this all on the same day. The GP will also carry out a post natal check for the mother after the baby check.Ensure you attend your postnatal check-up and your baby's health appointments to monitor both your recovery and your baby's well-being.
What to Expect at the Postnatal Check-Up:
- Discussion Points: Take note of any concerns or issues you wish to discuss with your healthcare professional, including mental and physical health, diet, exercise, contraception, and breastfeeding.
- Mental Health: Don't hesitate to talk about your mental health. Support options such as therapy, support groups, and medication can aid in your recovery.
- Physical Health: Address any physical concerns, such as complications during pregnancy or birth, urinary issues, healing of episiotomy or tears, and management of underlying health conditions.
- Diet and Exercise: Your Doctor can offer advice on adopting a healthy lifestyle, including diet and exercise recommendations.
- Contraception: Explore your options for contraception and discuss what might be best for you.
- Medical Checks: Your Doctor may conduct various checks, including blood pressure monitoring, abdominal examination, suture inspection, and ordering blood tests if necessary.
What to Expect at the Baby's 6 Week check and 8 week Immunisation Appointment:
Between six and eight weeks, your baby will undergo a thorough physical examination by your GP. This includes checks on hips, eyes, heart, testicles (for boys), as well as measurements of length, weight, and head circumference.

Family Planning
Don't want to get pregnant?
We can help you avoid an unwanted or unplanned pregnancy.
It can be tricky to know which type of contraception to use to prevent pregnancy because there are so many options.
We can help you decide which one is right for you! Examples include condoms, the pill, contraceptive patch, vaginal ring, the coil and implant.
Some practices can fit coils or implants that last for a few years so you don’t have to think about it, and they are reversible; this is why they are called Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARC). Here is a helpful page to compare these options.
Coils and implants (Long-Acting Reversible Contraception): We can book you an appointment at the following practice:
The Nightingale Practice - this practice accepts referrals from all City & Hackney practices.
Sexual Health London (pill and patch): You can order contraception online from Sexual Health London. You can choose what regular contraceptive you want and if you want a 3, 6 or 12 months supply. If you choose to order online, you will need to complete an online consultation with LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor which will be reviewed. You can pick up your contraceptive from a Lloyds Pharmacy, including some Sainsbury’s stores, or have it delivered by post.

They will ask you about what is happening in your life, what you enjoy, and what is getting in the way. The Social Prescriber might suggest services and activities that might help you or simply work with you to build your skills and confidence. They can tell you about community based services, such as lunch clubs, gardening groups, benefits advice, exercise groups.
